The cosmos is a canvas of mysteries, and the recent discovery of those enigmatic little red dots in the early Universe has scientists in a tizzy. These dots, as seen through the lens of the James Webb Space Telescope, are like cosmic puzzles, each one a story waiting to be unraveled. While some scientists lean towards the idea that these dots are the remnants of an early burst of star formation, others are drawn to the possibility of supermassive black holes, shrouded in a dense atmosphere of gas. This is where the concept of a 'quasi-star' comes into play, a theoretical object that could be the key to unlocking the secrets of these dots. But what makes this theory particularly fascinating is the idea that these quasi-stars might be the result of a black hole 'bombing' a star, causing it to shine while the black hole grows within. This raises a deeper question: what are the implications of such a phenomenon for our understanding of black hole growth and star formation in the early Universe? In my opinion, this theory is an intriguing one, but it is not without its challenges. For instance, the model doesn't yet correctly predict the brightness of many of the dots in the ultraviolet, which could be due to the presence of newly formed stars in the protogalaxy. However, this is a minor problem, and the model has already scored a significant point by matching much of what we see in the little red dots. What makes this discovery even more fascinating is the potential for these quasi-stars to account for up to about 1% of the mass of the galaxy in which they're forming. This is a high proportion, and it could easily be due to the special circumstances driving the growth of these unusual objects. But the story doesn't end there. The authors suggest that the bright lines seen in dot spectra and the hot dust seen in many dots might be coming from material surrounding the quasi-star itself or, in the case of the dust, floating in its atmosphere. This raises a deeper question: what are the implications of these materials for our understanding of the early Universe? In my opinion, this discovery is a significant step forward in our understanding of the early Universe, but it is also a reminder that there is still much to learn. The quasi-star model is an intriguing one, and it will be fascinating to see how it develops in the coming years. As scientists continue to explore the cosmos, they will undoubtedly uncover more mysteries, and it will be up to us to continue to ask the right questions and seek the answers that will help us understand the Universe better.
